Don't you love a simple and easy to implement classroom management strategy? You know that moment when the students are coming in to class and they all want to talk to you or ask a question? This simple classroom management strategy eliminates the pile up on the teacher. It's like magic.
I have used this simple strategy for both 5th and 6th grade and it can work for any grade 2-12. I teach my students to put their name on the whiteboard under "Need to Talk" and I will call them up after the basic morning routine is under way.
This "Need to Talk" area stays on the whiteboard and can be used at any time, not just at the beginning of class. Students need several reminders that I am available for anything they need, just add your name. This helps less outgoing students to get the courage to talk and keeps the daily sharers on my time line. When a student approaches, I just point to the board and remind them to add their name.
