Matter Game for 5th Grade

My students love the Up and Around Scavenger Hunts. Until now, I have only created them for 6th grade. I recently played the game with a 5th grade science class and they loved it.

The topics focus on atoms, molecules, chemical and physical changes, and properties of matter. This game is a review for NGSS 5-PS 1 Matter and Its Interactions.

Here are the questions included in this 20 question game. These are hard to read but can be easily viewed on the product preview HERE.

How to play:
1. The cards last better if you laminate them. Post the large cards around the room on walls, doors, and cupboards where students can see many at once.
2. Have students pair up and get a lined piece of paper. Students can start at any number. Students write down the number of the card they start at. They read the bottom of the large card and look around the room for the answer on the top part of another card. When they find the answer, they put the number of the card on their lined paper below their starting place. Each card number is placed on a line below. Be sure to model by going to any large card and reading the bottom and finding the answer at the top of another card.
3. Students can come check with you at any point to see if their answers so far are correct. Some students need a lot of encouragement that they are on the right track. Students will end at the card they started at. I really like this game because they must get the answer correct in order to complete the game. It is a great review to prepare for a test.
*A blank card is included for you to substitute you own questions if you’d like.
